Sclerotherapy for spider veins

Sclerotherapy is a safe and well established treatment for spider veins on the legs. Although there are a small number of alternative treatments, it remains the most reliably successful of them all.

Spider veins on the legs have multiple causes – some avoidable, some not.  The physiology behind these dilated veins involves an increase in the superficial venous system of our legs. This can be hereditary, due to hormonal changes such as pregnancy or from prolonged standing.

Although these small spider veins are unsightly, they will not cause any harm and treatment is mostly for cosmetic reason.

What are the side effects?

Common side effects after the treatment include raised red bumps on the skin showing the inflammation from the injection. There can be some bruising as well as a mild achiness of the legs.

Temporary side effects include pigmentation of the area injected, or the development of tiny broken capillaries in the injection area (matting).

Rare side effects include an allergic reaction, a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or ulceration of the skin with poor healing.

These will all be discussed during the consultation prior to treatment.

When can I expect results?

Initially the treated areas will look worse before they look better. You may need more than one session to achieve the desired results. Treated areas will show improvement 4-12 weeks after treatment.  Maintenance treatments will be required.
