What are Anti-Wrinkle Injectables?

Botulinum Toxin Type A (known as Botox®) is a medication injected into muscles of the face to soften wrinkles and creases on the skin. It has been used for decades in medical fields such as ophthalmology and neurology and has excellent research behind it.

In Aesthetic Medicine, we use Botox to treat wrinkles and fine lines of the face and it is a safe and effective treatment when performed by a skilled and trained medical professional.

Where can Anti-Wrinkle Injectables be used in the face?

Botox® can be used to treat the following areas of the face:

  • Frown
  • Forehead and brows
  • Crow’s feet (lines around the eyes)
  • Marionette lines (pulling down of the corners of the mouth)
  • Overactive chin muscle
  • Bunny lines (around the nose)
  • Smokers line on the lips
  • Gummy smile
  • Neck

How does it work?

Botox ® decreases the muscle activity in the treated area by interrupting the communication between the muscles and the nerve. During this time, the overlying skin gets a chance to rest and therefore the wrinkle softens or completely disappears. Once the Botox effect has worn off, the muscle will regain its ability and if not re-treated, the skin will wrinkle once more. Botox® takes 7-10 days to take full effect

Botox ® is only able to treat “dynamic” wrinkles i.e. caused by muscle movement. It cannot effectively treat wrinkles caused by skin laxity or volume loss. These can be treated with combination treatments such as dermal fillers and collagen stimulation treatments.

Is there downtime involved?

Botox ® is a quick procedure lasting a maximum of 30min and can be done during lunchtime or on the way to work. There is a small amount of discomfort due to the needle prick and some redness of the skin at the injection sites is normal and will fade after 40min or be covered lightly with concealer. Post-care instructions will be given and need to be followed.

Is it a safe treatment?

Botox has been safely used for over 20 years, but it still needs to be respected as a medication and the treatment performed in a medical practice. Side effects from Botox treatments range from mild and transient such as redness or a bruise, to rare, such as a droopy eyelid (ptosis ) or an allergic reaction. All of the possible side effects and complications will be discussed with you during your consultation.

How long will it last?

Typically Botox® lasts for 3-4 months. However, this is dependent on factors such as the dosage used, the area injected, the quality of the skin and well as lifestyle factors. Smoking and excessive exposure to UV rays (sunbeds especially) will decrease the lifespan of your Botox ® treatment.
